I have finally perfected it. This spaghetti sauce completes me. The addition of brown sugar, Worcestershire, hot sauce and spices create a variety of flavors that make this dish taste gourmet, and yet, it’s not so gourmet that it falls out of the comfort food category.
The best part is that you get to throw everything into a pot and forget about it. And it freezes well too – weeknight dinner in no time!
You really should give this a try. And then tell me what you think. And I get that spaghetti sauce is a “personal taste” kind of dish, like chili, so if you aren’t crazy about something (that’s okay). It will only hurt my feelings a little bit.

Sweet and Spicy Spaghetti Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
- 2 yellow onions chopped
- 3 cloves garlic chopped
- 1 1/2 cups chopped mushrooms
- 1 28 oz can stewed tomatoes
- 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire
- 1/2 tsp hot sauce or to taste
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp celery seed
- 1 tbsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 2 tbsp parsley
- 1 bay leaf
- freshly ground salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a dutch oven or large pot, brown ground beef with onions and garlic. Add mushrooms.
- Pour in tomatoes, and break up stewed tomatoes with the back of your spoon. Reduce heat.
- Add remaining ingredients, and stir to combine. Cover and simmer about 40 minutes.
